Renewal through Breathing & Meditation

Morning. The beginning of the week. A birthday. New Year’s Day. Religious holidays. The end of an era.

All of these instances offer an opportunity for renewal.

A chance to reflect, plan, and start anew.

To recharge so that you are healthier, happier, more settled. It’s hope wrapped up in goodness.

Yet, sometimes renewal happens after terribly difficult challenges or on the other side of tragedy. This is more of a rebirth or rejuvenation. Hindsight after navigating hardships can offer clarity that motivates us to change our behavior so we can do better in the future. Emerging on the other side of grief can open us to responsibility to honor the loved one we lost.

By definition, renewal is “an instance of resuming an activity or state after an interruption” or “the replacing or repair of something that is worn out, run-down, or broken.”

On a normal basis, life is hard. No one is promised an easy road. Daily challenges help us build our resilience and fortitude so that when REALLY hard things or unimaginable things happen, we have a foundation from which to cope. We can sit in the challenge with all of our feelings and the facts. We can let them be but not absorb. And then we can act.

We can do better. We can honor. We can settle down into ourselves and be.

And, my friends, it’s important I point out that renewal doesn’t have to wait for big occasions or be the result of great suffering.

It can also happen at any minute of the day to help deal with daily struggles and can be achieved through breathing and meditation.

5 seconds or 1 minute or 5 minutes spent focusing your attention on breathing steadily can be immensely powerful in pressing pause on anger, catching your breath in grief, or simply resetting goodness. Meditation, a one-centered focus, is the mightiest tool your brain can use to concentrate and navigate a challenge. Whether it's through focusing your attention on your breath or visualizing your steps in action, turning inward is the brain break and heart check you need to cope and thrive.

Utilizing these tools are like playing an internal game of 2 truths and a lie.

Breathing and meditation allow us to remind ourselves of what is and quiet the chatter of all the lies, negative thoughts, and worries we tell ourselves.

They can be done anywhere, require no money, special skill, or status and are useful to us all. It is renewal that can be called upon at any time of the day no matter what is going on to bring you hope wrapped up in goodness and inspire purposeful action. I encourage you to try it. And keep trying.
