43. Unfuck your New Year’s resolution
Western society has placed such a huge importance on creating a new year’s resolution that’s of course fueled by the building blocks of perfectionism, hustle and grind, commitment, and discipline culture.
Many of us who are in decolonized spaces and doing liberation work in our lives have adapted the resolution making practice to be less about achievement, commitment, and drive and more meaningful and true with choosing a word or a goal that is more heart-centered.
In the last 2 weeks, this has been all anyone can talk about in shared spaces and on social media. And I’ve noticed a shadow hanging around that represents guilt, anxiety, judgment, and shame around not having chosen a word or connected with a specific goal yet, or what’s worse, feeling like your word or goal isn’t enough compared to others’ or society’s standards.
Even with those of us who are decolonizing and liberating our own lives, the dominant narrative is still there messing with our heads.
This got me thinking and the shit we need to talk about this week is: what if you don’t choose a word or specific goal for 2024?
In this episode, I’m taking a critical lens to the practice of choosing a word and creating a goal for the new year. Not because I don’t think it’s valuable but because I’m tired of the pressure we put on ourselves in the process of creating and upholding it. Join me as I discuss:
Getting curious about the real significance or driving force behind choosing a word or creating a goal for the year
Exploring what might happen and what you might learn about yourself if you didn’t
Why we put so much pressure on ourselves to do this practice
Taking a magnifying glass to where your ego and the self-improvement theme from dominant culture is playing into your plans
Prompts for creating a plan that is gentle, flexible, and sustainable based on how you want to feel and experience life this year.
