22. Take it easy. Your sleep will thank you.

As we disrupt the ways the systems in society are oppressing us and those with identities more marginalized than our own, we must disrupt how they’re impacting our self-care, and in this particular conversation, our ability to take it easy and enjoy abundant and restful sleep.

When it comes to taking it easy, remember: it’s a vibe.

In this week’s episode, I’m breaking down these two Ayurvedic lifestyle principles and here’s a quick rundown of the shit we need to talk about:

How you take it easy will depend on how you’re feeling and shift from season to season. For spring, taking it easy is all about light-hearted, joyful, renewing, and playful. We’re talking:

  • Socialize - in a way that makes you feel whole, uplifted, and rehydrated

  • Hobbies

  • Quiet time - this could be without sound, or quiet in your mind or allowing your body to be quiet

  • Time to yourself - not just by yourself but doing things of YOUR choosing

  • Rest - so much more than just napping and sleeping

Factors that could be completely messing with your sleep include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Coffee consumption and timing

  • Ongoing unmanaged stress and anxiety messing with how you experience and engage with your day

  • The pace of your day pushing your inner engine into overdrive on a regular basis

  • Staying up too late at night watching tv or on social media trying to decompress from the stress and demands of the day

  • Often dealing with or ruminating over work stuff way after work hours

  • Losing countless precious minutes laying in bed worrying about the next day

The great thing about taking it easy is that it directly benefits your sleep, both in quantity and quantity! And when it comes interrupting the cycle of burnout and constant stress society has created for us, the Ayurvedic principles of taking it easy and enjoy abundant and restful sleep are integral in the HOW of doing this, which is in:

  • Having a well-timed and intentional schedule throughout the day

  • Slowing down your pace and pausing more throughout the day

  • Establishing a power down time

  • Engaging in calming evening rituals

  • A consistent bedtime (and wake time)

So drop in for all the goods on taking it easy… your sleep (and so many other processes within your being) will thank you!
